You can create a storage pool on M.2 NVMe SSDs only on certain Synology NAS models that support using Synology M.2 NVMe SSDs to create storage pools. The knowledge base lists these models:
- 25-series: DS1825+, DS1525+, DS925+, DS725+, DS425+
- 23-series: DS1823xs+, DS923+, DS723+, DS423+
- 22-series: DS1522+
- 21-series: DS1821+, DS1621xs+, DS1621+
Before creating the pool:
- Make sure the M.2 SSDs do not contain important data, because all existing data will be deleted during creation.
- Check Storage Manager > HDD/SSD and make sure the drives are in Healthy status.
- The drives must be of the same type.
- M.2 SSDs are not hot-pluggable, so you must power off the system completely before inserting or removing an M.2 SSD.
To create the storage pool in DSM:
1. Go to Storage Manager > Storage Pool.
2. Click Create.
3. Choose the storage pool type:
- Quick: best for beginners; automatically optimizes storage capacity and performance.
Quick creation mode is only available on models that support SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID).
- Custom: for advanced options such as RAID types and capacity allocation.
Note: the knowledge base also states that for some models, Storage Manager may automatically create a volume and a storage pool after DSM installation.
