Pick the DS224+ if you want materially better performance and headroom: it has a much faster Intel CPU, 2 GB RAM with a higher upgrade ceiling, and more capable SMB features. It still has only 2 bays and no 10GbE or M.2, so the decisive win is CPU/RAM, not expansion. Choose the DS223j only if you want the cheapest basic 2-bay NAS and can live with a much weaker CPU and lower RAM ceiling.
